Dracantapede Editing What is the difference between an editing and a tutoring service when it comes to undergraduate papers? At times, not much, beyond a certain question of focus. And yet it's important to keep that focus clear, especially when papers are to be submitted for academic credit. If you're an undergraduate and your paper needs a rewrite, I'm happy to help you rewrite it--that is, to go over it with you, proofread it, suggest technical changes, give you pep talks when you can't make yourself sit down to it--with the ultimate goal that you will learn from the process. On the professional or business level, however, there is less question of "credit" for the sheer technicalities of writing. Yet the need is often more pressing for those technicalities to be correct. Often a document is produced by an expert whose knowledge of his or her field is unquestionable, but whose command of written English (academic or professional) is not strong. Such people often cannot spare the time to begin a new area of study that is outside their specific field. Nor can their already overburdened support staff take on the painstaking task of rewriting--sometimes even entirely recasting--documents for publication. And yet, the consequences of miscommunication can be dire. Situations like these call for editors and rewriters trained in academic, scientific, and professional English. As a Ph. D. candidate in Renaissance Literature, who has taught English on the college level, free-lanced for college textbook publishers, and edited and rewritten scientific manuscripts for an accredited journal affiliated with the United Nations, I am able to perform both light and heavy edits, and if necessary even complete rewrites to produce manuscripts and technical manuals that convey the information you have so carefully compiled clearly and accurately. Policies, funds, and sometimes even lives may depend on your audience's ability to understand clearly what you are trying to tell them. After all your work compiling evidence and assembling chains of reasoning, the actual writing of your document is no place to skimp for lack of time, out of self-consciousness, or from sheer discomfort with the writing process. Your secretary cannot do this "in her spare moments." If you need help, get the right kind. I would be happy to discuss your editing needs with you by phone or e-mail, if you would like to send me your name, phone number (with area-code, please), and e-mail address. Manuscripts are generally exchanged by e-mail, surface-mail, or express mail.
